113,400 SF

This project included mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection design for a new 113,400 SF elementary school, being designed to accommodate 740 students in Montgomery County, Maryland. The facility was designed to exceed ASHRAE 90.1 requirements, IBC and Montgomery County Energy conservation Codes, as well as recommendations from the publication “Energy Efficient Design for New Buildings” published jointly by ANSI/ASHRAE/IES. This project is designed to achieve LEED Silver certification. Kibart designed this school to have an Energy Use Intensity (EUI) of 35. Recent readings confirmed a 31 EUI, exceeding the initial goal.

Space includes:

  • Pre K- 5 grade classrooms
  • Special education classrooms
  • Instructional support rooms, including art, music, etc.
  • Physical education gymnasium, office and storage
  • Multipurpose room; cafeteria
  • Instructional media center
  • Administration
  • Counseling suite
  • Staff development area
  • Health services suite
  • Building service facilities

In an October 2016 email from Karen Anderson, the LEED Project Specialist for Wheaton Woods, Karen stated “Wheaton Woods ES was awarded 18 out of 19 possible points in energy performance. I believe this is the best that any MCPS LEED project has accomplished to date.”
